Joan Laporta opened up for the first time after Lionel Messi visited Camp Nou, confirming he had no prior knowledge but was always welcoming. He emphasized that Barcelona comes before anyone else and announced plans for a grand farewell ceremony, while stating that Messi's return to play for the team seems unlikely.
The incident sparked excitement among fans worldwide, as no one expected Messi to return to the stadium unannounced, and no Barcelona executives had prior knowledge of the visit.
Recently, Laporta gave an interview about this, affirming that Messi's visit was a personal decision by the player, but the club was very pleased to see him back.
“I am very happy to see Messi back at Camp Nou, but I must honestly say we had no prior knowledge of his visit. He knows this is always his home, and we love him dearly. I believe Messi deserves the greatest farewell in history.”
Regarding Messi’s transfer in 2021, which occurred shortly after Laporta took office as club president, he clearly stated he has “no regrets” about that decision because it was necessary for the club’s survival.
“I have no regrets about what happened. Although it wasn’t what everyone wanted, at that time it was the best decision we could make. Barcelona must always come first.”
When asked about rumors that Messi might return to the team on a short-term or loan deal to end his career with Barcelona, Laporta firmly responded that it is inappropriate to speculate about unfounded stories right now.
“Out of respect for Messi, our players, and club members, I think this is not the time to discuss baseless rumors.”
Nevertheless, Laporta confirmed that the club is preparing a grand farewell ceremony for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner after the stadium renovations are completed next year.
“We are planning to honor Messi in the greatest way football has ever seen. When the new stadium is finished, its capacity will increase to 105,000 seats, and we will hold a truly fitting ceremony for him.”
