Hong Kongg Warns Citizens to Exercise Caution When Traveling to Japan Amid Rising Attacks on Chinese Nationals

On 16 Nov 2025 GMT+7, Hong Kong's Security Bureau issued an alert advising citizens traveling to or residing in Japan to heighten their safety awareness after noting an increasing trend of attacks against Chinese nationals.

The statement on their website indicated that since mid-2025, incidents targeting Chinese nationals in Japan have been rising steadily, recommending travelers from Hong Kong closely follow announcements from the Chinese embassy and consulates in Japan.

This development came after China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement on 14 Nov 2025 GMT+7, urging Chinese citizens to temporarily avoid traveling to Japan to reduce security risks.

This was in response to remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who addressed parliament earlier that month, stating that a military emergency in Taiwan could pose a threat to Japan's survival—a comment that displeased the Chinese government, viewing it as interference in the Taiwan issue.

Japan remains one of the most popular destinations for Hong Kong tourists. Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization show that over 2.68 million visitors from Hong Kong traveled to Japan last year, ranking fifth among countries and regions with the highest number of tourists to Japan.
