Lending Your Bank Account to Others Risks Becoming a Mule Account Without Realizing It, Potentially Leading to Account Seizure or Imprisonment

May I borrow your bank account?

Would you lend your account to a friend? This may seem minor, but our kindness can turn against us. Recently, a university student from a well-known school in Udon Thani revealed that their bank account was frozen after lending it to a foreign friend.

The student explained that the foreign friend claimed they needed the bank account number to sell products online and borrowed it. When money was deposited, the student withdrew cash and gave it to the friend. Later, however, the student's account was frozen, preventing any transactions.

What seemed like a small issue led to multiple problems. The student stated they had no money to pay dorm fees or tuition. The student loan from the Student Loan Fund (SLF) was also in that account. Upon consulting the police, they were told it was a "mule account."

If anyone encounters this, it is a serious matter. Being a mule account carries risks of both civil and criminal penalties, potentially causing significant effort and financial loss to resolve.

Three things you must know before becoming a "mule account."

There is an old saying: “Showing kindness to others may cause harm to ourselves.” This remains true across all times, as sometimes goodwill extended to others brings trouble upon ourselves.

Thairath Money presents lessons from this student's case that everyone should know as follows.

1. Beware of lending your bank account to others.

You never know how someone might use your bank account or personal information. Your bank account could be used as a "mule account" by criminals for illegal activities like money laundering or fraud. You might be wrongfully implicated, have your account frozen, or worse, be arrested.

If illegal financial transactions occur through your account, you will be the first person police investigate, which could lead to account seizure as in the case described.

2. What to do if you realize your account is being used as a mule account (before the account is frozen).

If a friend borrows your bank account and you suspect it is being used as a mule account, follow these two steps to freeze the account and prove your innocence:

2.1 Contact your bank immediately: Call the fraud reporting center of your bank to suspend the account without delay.

2.2 Gather all evidence: Collect all communication records with the fraudster through any channels such as LINE or Facebook. Then file a police report immediately at a station or online at www.thaipoliceonline.go.th.
