KPop Demon Hunters is a 2025 American animated musical urban fantasy film directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote the screenplay with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, the film features the voices of Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. The story follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix, who live double lives as demon hunters, facing off against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons.
KPop Demon Hunters originated from Kang's desire to create a story inspired by her Korean heritage, blending mythology, demonology, and K-pop to craft a visually distinctive and culturally rooted film. By March 2021, the film was reported to be in production at Sony Pictures Animation with the full creative team on board and was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks. Its visuals were influenced by concert lighting, editorial photography, and music videos, drawing inspiration from anime and Korean dramas. The soundtrack includes original songs by various musicians, with a score composed by Marcelo Zarvos.
KPop Demon Hunters began streaming on Netflix on 20 June 2025, with a sing-along version released theatrically on limited dates: 23–24 August and 31 October – 2 November. The film was praised for its animation, visual style, voice acting, writing, and music, becoming the most-watched original title in Netflix history with over 500 million views. Its sing-along theatrical release was the widest ever for a Netflix film and the first Netflix movie to top the U.S. box office. The film won numerous awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards and the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and was named Time magazine's 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
